Mary Sue: Escaping From Reality Can Help You Cope
I’ve always had an active imagination as a kid, and that hasn’t changed much over the years. Like a gardener, I take care of my imagination by carefully watering it and pruning off any dead pieces so that it stays vibrant, and full of life. The reason is because, without it, I would probably go crazy in our grey, suit wearing, traffic congested society.
In my imagination, whether it’s through my writings, dreams, or nightmares, there is a level of escapism that is pretty damn hard to beat. When I can retreat so far into my own mind that I forget about the outside world completely…those are the moments I look forward to in the day.
But using my imagination to escape from reality for a while is also how I learn to cope with some things. For instance, I like working, but lets face it, bosses suck sometimes. So when my day consists of sitting in a chair and straightening all the boxes in the store I tend to daydream that my boss is an evil wizard who cast a puppet spell on me and is making me do his bidding. But I’m fighting to resist his spell by getting up to go to the bathroom, getting a drink of water, or talking to employees. OR, on a day when he’s been a particularly huge pain in the rear, I pretend he gets eaten by a dragon or some equally ferocious creature I can think of (and there are a lot!). Not only does this entertain me while I’m working, I feel a little less angry towards the guy. I mean, he may be kind of a jerk, but the guy has to worry about getting eaten by dragons!
Reading is a great escape too that require less work on your part. Since you’re diving into a world someone else has already created, all you have to do is read and enjoy as the story unfolds. Maybe you’ll find a life lesson or two buried in the pages.
And maybe, if you can apply them to your life things will work out for the better.
Best wishes in all your future endeavors,
Mary Sue
